Bryant Elementary Spelling Bee

Lawson was selected to participate in the Bryant Elementary Spelling Bee.  We were SO proud of her.  She practiced a list of 200 words to be in her classroom bee.  They had a little class competition and her teacher selected 3 students to participate in the school bee.  Lawson was one of them!
There were 30 students in the school bee...from 3-5th grade.  There were given a list of 400 words and given two weeks to study.  The words ranged from 1st-8th grade in level.  Evidently, 8th graders are geniuses these days...the last 50 words on the study list were words that I had never heard, could barely pronounce, didn't know what they meant and certainly could not spell!  We worked on the words most everyday before the bee....learning 3-4 new words each day.  I knew we would not get all the way through the list but I felt like if we tackled more than that...they words wouldn't' t really stick. During the bee, they would start with the easiest words first working their way towards harder words.    We would review previous days words...then learn a few new ones.  Most days Lawson was eager to practice! (Of course, there were a few days she wasn't so eager! But, she usually plowed through anyways.)  I was so proud of her effort...because this was an optional activity that required her to study every day!
Finally the morning of the bee!  I had given no thought to how nerve wracking this experience would be! And not just because I wanted Lawson to win!  This experience just puts a LOT of pressure on each kid!  You could see it on their little faces and hear it in their little voices!  I found myself holding my breath while the kids would spell!

They each come down to the microphone...listen to their word be called to them...then spell it in the microphone...with an audience of about 75 silent onlookers...then wait for the caller to say "correct" or "incorrect".  If you spell the word wrong at any point, and go back and correct yourself...the word is still counted as wrong.  So, you can not misspeak any letter.
Lawson did VERY well!  She made the top 15!  The top 15 got to sit in the chairs while they waited for their turn each round.
She hung in to the 7th round.  The word "trifle" took her out.  She spelled it "triful".  Silly English language!  The winner came from the 8th round...so she was right there.  She was the 21st or 22nd to leave the bee.  During that 7th round, 6 participants went out.  So, it was a tight race! She handled her exit with poise and grace too.  Really proud, Lawson! You should "bee" too!
